Gastroenterology Publishes Special Issue on End-Stage Liver Disease

The editors of Gastroenterology are pleased to announce the publication of this year's highly anticipated special 13th issue. Published each May, the 13th issue is devoted to a particular topic of broad interest that spans basic science, translational medicine, clinical investigation, and population science. This year's special issue, entitled "End-Stage Liver Disease: Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, and Management", focuses on one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States. In this comprehensive review series, the editors and authors provide a state-of-the-art template for the diagnosis and care of patients with severe liver damage and spotlight areas of progress and controversy.

In conjunction with Editor-in-Chief Anil K. Rustgi, MD, this issue was developed by Gastroenterology's experts in liver disease, Associate Editors Bruce R. Bacon, MD, Kyong-Mi Chang, MD, and Rebecca G. Wells, MD. Their combined expertise guided the contributing authors - all leaders in the field of hepatology. A wide range of important and timely topics are discussed, including:

• Mechanisms of liver injury;
• Hepatic steatosis and its relation to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and hepatitis C;
• Pathophysiology of portal hypertension;
• Special issues in ESLD management, including care of the pediatric patient and principles of nutrition; and
• Controversies in liver transplantation.

The editors believe that this special issue on end-stage liver disease will contribute to exciting changes by stimulating interest in ongoing and future research.
