Article Announces New Current Procedural Terminology Coding-Related Issues for 2009
published online 24 December 2008.
Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) is a listing of descriptive terms and identifying codes for reporting medical services and procedures. First developed and published in 1966 and currently maintained by the American Medical Association (AMA), the purpose of the CPT is to provide a uniform language that accurately describes medical, surgical, and diagnostic services, and thereby serves as an effective means for reliable nationwide communication among physicians, and other health care providers, patients, and third parties.
